Lake County snapped the Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team’s season-opening unbeaten streak with a 2-0 defeat of the Chargers on Monday afternoon at Kleine Field.
The Chargers (2-1-2 overall, 0-1-2 Region IV) were limited to just six shots on goal in being kept off the scoreboard for the first time this season.
The Lancers (1-3 overall) got on the board in the seventh minute after Sandburg keeper Felipe Petry (Barao, Brazil/Instituto Estadul de Educacao) collided with Maxwell Keenan in the box. Olgar Medina converted the penalty kick for a 1-0 Lake County lead.
The Lancers doubled their lead in the 20th minute as Santiago Hernandez rocketed a shot from 30 yards out into the top-left corner.
Sandburg’s two best scoring chances came within second of each other later in the second half. Kevin Murillo (Miami, Fla./Sports Leadership & Management) sent a shot toward the top-right corner of the goal, but Lake County keeper Kyle Swanson was able to make a leaping save. Off the ensuing corner kick, Mohamed Elshafie (Miami, Fla./Immaculata LaSalle) had a strike that rang off the right post.
